Ottawa to host its first LGBTQ+ expo next summer

When Jo Riding's 13-year-old son told her he was gay, she had many questions.

She wondered if he was too young to know he was gay and what challenges he might face growing up. Riding turned to Jesse Reynolds for answers.

The two are now set to hold Ottawa's first LGBTQ+ expo next summer. The Queer Sphere LGBTQ+ Expo will look to kick off global pride month and bring together businesses that offer a whole range of products and services geared toward members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Reynolds told 1310 NEWS' The Rick Gibbons Show that some ask whether the expo is necessary in 2018. He said it is still good to have such an event to know which businesses are welcoming, or for parents who may have questions.

"It's not about reaching only gay people," he said. "It's about reaching everybody. It's just letting the members of the LGBTQ know that if you're nervous or unsure where to find a realtor or a bank that will give you a mortgage for two husbands, here we are and we'll accept you."

The expo will be held June 8 and 9, 2019 at the Shaw Centre. Queer Sphere Ottawa hopes to eventually take the expo on the road to other parts of Canada.
